The Fantastic B&O Tonearm and Pickup Cartridge designs released in 1959

The Pickup Cartridge
The B&O stereophonic pickup cartridge is a magnetic phonograph cartridge designed for superior High Fidelity reproduction of stereophonic microgrove records. It features a symmetrical, accurately balanced moving-iron design which has identical performance on each stereophonic channel, using four coils in push-pull pairs. this design provides equal compliance in all directions, full cancellation on noise and distortion components in monophonic use and smooth frequency response throughout the audio spectrum. True stereo sound is preserved even at the highest frequencies through superior channel separation.

The tonearm
The tonearm is statically balanced by means of a special engineered counterbalance so the arm will be in a state of neutral equilibrium if the spring under the arm is removed. Consequently, when the spring is put on it will be the only factor determining the stylus pressure, which will always be at right angles to the gramophone record regardless of the placement of the gramophon motor or from vibrations in the motor. Incidently, B&O tonearms are so perfectly balanced that you can play a record with the player standing on its edge.
B&O tonearms have a compensation for the ingoing force - skating effect - arising on account of theinteraction between the offset angle and the friction between the stylus and the record, so that, with B&O tonearms , the stylus will exert equal pressure on both grove walls.
This is of great importance when playing stereo records, in which each grove wall contains its separate signal.
